Texas Medical Board Licensed Acupuncturist

Gua Sha

Gua Sha is another ancient healing technique in Chinese Medicine commonly used by many acupuncturists to complement their treatments.

With Gua Sha, a scraping technique using a special blunt and smooth instrument is applied on the skin to stimulate blood flow to come to the surface and permeate the tissue involved. Before the smooth edge of the instrument is used, the skin is lubricated with an herbal oil.

The Gua Sha therapy is generally applied in areas of the body like back, neck, shoulders, buttock, and limbs. By bringing warmth, blood and oxygen to specific areas Gua Sha releases part of the excess heat and toxins of the body through the surface. The technique is considered to help with symptoms and prevention of flu, asthma, common cold, and acute and chronic pain. It is also applied frequently for respiratory conditions and high fever. Gua Sha is also useful for muscle injuries, and has since been used to help athletes recover from strenuous activity outcomes. Even patients with chronic pain and/or inflammation have benefited by the application of this technique.
